LABOUM Reveals They Nearly Disbanded Before ‘Journey to Atlantis’ Rose to Popularity

LABOUM unveiled that they were close to disbanding but thanks to the sudden fame of their 2016 song “Journey to Atlantis” (or “Fresh Adventure”), their group’s future was saved.

LABOUM Shares They Were about to Disband Until ‘Journey to Atlantis’ Achieves Belated Popularity

On Nov. 4, LABOUM sat down for an interview with SpoTV news and talked about how they almost resulted in their disbandment. These obstacles took place before their five-year-old song “Journey to Atlantis” saw a sudden surge in popularity.

Their case is quite the same as what happened to Brave Girls’ “Rollin’,” which also skyrocketed to fame in February after a YouTuber uploaded an edited video of the band’s performances of the track alongside YouTube comments.

During the talks with SpoTV News, LABOUM candidly said that they had reached a crisis and so they thought of disbanding. They cited that they are the so-called unknown girl group that did not receive much attention.

LABOUM member Jinyea (formerly called ZN) revealed that they had talked about disbanding and that she was already thinking of changing her career to acting as she wanted to act since before.

LABOUM member Soyeon shared that she was roughly thinking about searching for a different path but she still wanted to continue being a singer. She added that she was looking for opportunities to sing OSTs or feature in other artists’ songs.

Unlike the other members, LABOUM member Haein stated that she initially thought of leaving the entertainment industry for good. She explained that instead of staying in the entertainment world, she would like to try entering a different field, although she was still in the process of figuring what field it would be.

Amid LABOUM’s plan to disband, their 2016 song “Journey to Atlantis” started garnering belated popularity.

The track first gained fame on YouTube charts this past March after a compilation of the group performing the song was shared on a YouTube channel. It was then covered by the project group MSG Wannabe on MBC’s variety show “How Do You Play?”

Following that, LABOUM’s “Journey to Atlantis” began rising on Korea’s real-time music charts until it successfully hit No. 1 on Bugs and was the No. 1 most popular keyword on MelOn. It later scored No. 7 on Genie.

And because of the unexpected popularity of “Journey to Atlantis,” LABOUM was given the chance to perform on music shows once again.

Notably, this year marks the girl group’s seventh year in the K-pop industry, and if they did disband before “Journey to Atlantis” became famous, they would have been one of the idol groups who failed to break the infamous “seven-year curse of K-pop.”

LABOUM Makes a Comeback as a Four-Member Group with “Blossom”

Because of the belated success of “Journey to Atlantis,” LABOUM members signed exclusive contracts with their new agency Interpark Music Plus and released a new mini-album this year.

On Nov. 3 the girl group returned to the music scene as a four-member girl group. Former member Yujeong left the group after her contract expired in September.

On that day, LABOUM released their third EP “Blossom,” which contains four songs including the title track “Kiss Kiss.” Member Soyeon participated in writing the lyrics, which express a strong feeling of love for someone.
