BTS Jungkook’s ‘Backdoor Advertisement’ Case Closes without Undergoing Investigation

The controversy about BTS Jungkook’s backdoor advertisement has been closed without the Fair Trade Commission conducting an investigation.

A “backdoor advertisement” refers to the practice of undisclosed advertising by celebrities or influencers that touches on the promotion of products without revealing their connection to the company producing the products or being paid to promote them.

BTS Jungkook’s ‘Backdoor Advertisement’ Controversy Ends without Any Investigations

On Oct. 27, the Korean media outlet Sports Khan reported that the case regarding BTS member Jungkook’s under-the-table advertisement issue has been closed.

They added that the Fair Trade Commission confirmed their decision not to perform an investigation for the complaint in regards to the backdoor advertisement allegation.

There were a total of two complaints submitted to the Fair Trade Commission: the first one was filed on Oct. 1 and it involves a brand of tea that was mentioned during BTS Jungkook’s live broadcast, and the second one was filed on Oct. 5 and it is about the male idol exposing clothes from his brother’s clothing brand.

In response to the complaint that Jungkook intentionally exposed the outfits that his brother’s company produces, the Fair Trade Commission stated that to have economic consideration, the content should have an impact on the public, so souvenirs and samples provided to unnamed people do not fall under this category (paid advertisements, etc.).

The FTC continued that if the content is created voluntarily by the individual, then there are no problems with it.

They went on to say that in the case of BTS Jungkook’s alleged backdoor advertisement, they had difficulties in determining whether the exposure of the brand’s clothing through different media was asked by the advertiser or done voluntarily.

Concerning the complaint about BTS member Jungkook promoting a tea brand, the Fair Trade Commission commented that even though the idol shared that he was drinking tea during the broadcast, it is hard for them to consider it an advertisement because of the company name or trademark was not revealed.

The FTC further said that they decided to close Jungkook’s “backdoor advertisement” case after confirming that there was no request for advertisements from the brand.
